Ang Military Bases Agreement sa pagitan ng Pilipinas at Estados Unidos ay nilagdaan noong Marso 14, 1947. Inaprubahan ito ng Senado ng Pilipinas noong Marso 26, 1947, at inaprubahan ito ng Kongreso ng US noong Enero 21, 1948.

Binigyan ang US ng 99 na taon para panatilihin ang 16 na mga outpost ng militar sa bansa bilang bahagi ng kasunduan. Kabilang dito ang kilalang Clark Air Base sa Pampanga at Subic Naval Base sa Zambales. Saklaw din ng kasunduan ang recreation center ng Baguio, pangkalahatang imbakan ng Pampanga, at mga pasilidad ng komunikasyon sa buong bansa.

Tinutulan ng mga Pilipino ang pagbibigay sa mga Amerikano ng ganap na kontrol sa mga base, gayundin ang kakayahang pahabain ang panunungkulan ng kasunduan, palawakin ang mga base, at magtatag ng mga bagong base kung kinakailangan. Naniniwala ang mga kalaban sa kasunduan na, taliwas sa argumento ng US na maaaring tumulong ang mga base ng seguridad ng Pilipinas, mas nalalagay sa panganib ang bansa. Naniniwala siyang maaapektuhan ito kung makikipagdigma ang US sa mga kalaban nito.

Ayon kay Roxas, nang magkaroon ng kasunduan, isinaalang-alang ng gobyerno ang kapakanan ng mga Pilipino. Sinabi niya na ang US ay hindi naglalagay ng pressure sa Pilipinas at na ang Pilipinas ay hindi pa nagbibigay sa US ng malaking bilang ng mga base. Sinabi rin niya na hindi maaapektuhan ang pang-araw-araw na pamumuhay ng mga Pilipino dahil ang mga base ay matatagpuan malayo sa mga sentro ng populasyon.

Bukod sa isyu ng pagbangon mula sa digmaan, ang Pilipinas ay humarap sa ilang iba pang mga balakid at krisis na nagkaroon ng malaking epekto sa pampulitika, ekonomiya, at panlipunang buhay ng mga Pilipino.

Sa pangkalahatan, sinasabing higit na umaasa ang Pilipinas sa Estados Unidos pagkatapos ng kalayaan dahil sa hindi pantay na mga kasunduan kaysa noong panahon ng Commonwealth.
