Small businesses must be resourceful to survive. With smaller budgets, big ideas need to be as proactive as they are cost-efficient, taking into account everything from consistent industry changes, cash flow, customer needs and the unexpected challenges you never saw coming. Multitasking to keep up with the big guys on a fraction of the budget is why small businesses have become known for bootstrapping (using existing resources or with as little capital as possible to solve problems), and being creative about their approach to staying competitive.

Demand

· Wrench Set – Php 500 pataas

· Pipe Cleaner – Php 40 pataas

· Bolts and Nuts – Php 20 pataas

· Teflon Tape – Php 5 pataas

Forty-five percent of small business owners said they are worried about looking for new customers, making it their number one overall concern. Small business owners today mention customer attraction and retention as two of their most pressing concerns, but many set aside minimal budgets for marketing. In fact, 25 percent of small business owners report that they don’t spend any money on marketing

Don't do it alone. You need a support system while you are starting a business (and later on). A family member or friend that you can bounce ideas off and who will listen sympathetically to the latest business start-up crisis is invaluable. Even better, find a mentor. Good mentors will make your dreams achievable more quickly. The best mentors are those who have done what you are trying to accomplish before, successfully, and who are helping you for friendship or self-fulfilment reasons. They may be formal Board of Advisor or Director members, friends, colleagues, or interested peers.

Work out. Exercise. Be fit. The stress you are going through is probably the highest you have experienced in your life, and if you don’t work out now, your ability to be at your best will start to fall, quickly. Take a break at lunch and do 30 push-ups, 30 sit-ups, and 30 jumping jacks daily. Work your way up to a solid 20-40 minutes of exercise daily.

Set deadlines and goals for yourself and adhere to them. Determine your goals for your business, write them down and give them to a trusted friend with a date set for 5 months or a year from then to review them with you. On a daily basis, set your goals for the day and at the end of the day review them.

Do what you love. You're going to devote a lot of time and energy to starting a business and building it into a successful enterprise, so it's really important that you truly deeply enjoy what you do, whether it be running fishing charters, creating pottery or providing financial advice.

Don't wait until you've officially started your business to line these up, because your business can't survive without them. Do the networking. Make the contacts. Sell or even give away your products or services. You can't start marketing too soon.

While the journey of every company from start-up to success is different, there are some steps that every business must go through. Buy into your own vision and don’t waiver it just for a pay check. You know your vision better than anyone else, and if you lose sight of it, the world will too. Build the best product you can, and make sure it has long-term value.
