Zamboanga City (10 MAY) -- The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) in Region IX released a total of P 1,860,000.00 in life insurance claims to its beneficiaries and members during the first two weeks of May.
Dr. Hassan Gabra T. Jumdain, OWWA IX Regional Director yesterday said that the amount comprises the death and burial claims of beneficiaries of 13 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) from different countries.
Family Welfare Officer and program focal, Badria Abdula said that out of the 13 deaths, 10 died of illness while 3 died due to accidents. The beneficiaries visited the OWWA9 office to personally receive the funds.
OFWs who are active OWWA members are covered by OWWA' with life and accident insurance.
Each OFW is entitled to a P100,000 insurance claim for natural death and P200,000 for deaths caused by accidents. Aside from this, a P20, 000.00 burial claims will also be given irrespective of the cause of death.
To avail of the said benefits, an OFW must be an active OWWA member where one must pay an amount of 25USD or PHP1,157.00 per contract with a maximum of two years. Members are encouraged to pay regularly or renew his or her membership dues to qualify for the said claims.
For OFWs whose membership will expire at the jobsite, they may renew their membership to the OWWA collecting officer at the nearest Philippine Embassy to ensure security and protection. END. (Karen Grafia)
