Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining inside the uterus, known as the endometrium, starts to grow outside the uterus. This can cause pain, especially during menstrual periods. Women with endometriosis often experience increased menstrual pain, though the intensity and occurrence can vary greatly from person to person.

Some women with endometriosis may experience severe pain with every menstrual cycle, while others may have intermittent pain that does not occur with every period. The pain can also vary in nature; some may experience it as sharp and debilitating, while others may have a dull, chronic ache. Additionally, the presence of pain does not necessarily correlate with the extent of the endometrial growth. Some women with mild endometriosis can have severe pain, while those with extensive endometriosis may have little or no pain.

Other symptoms associated with endometriosis can include, but are not limited to:

Chronic pelvic pain (not only during menstrual periods)
Pain during or after sex
Painful bowel movements or urination during menstrual periods
Heavy menstrual bleeding or bleeding between periods
Infertility
If you are experiencing significant pain during your periods or any other symptoms suggestive of endometriosis, it is important to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a physical exam and may recommend imaging tests or laparoscopy to diagnose the condition. Treatment options vary depending on the severity of symptoms and whether you wish to become pregnant, and they can include pain management, hormone therapy, and surgery.
