Una sa lahat, hindi tatanggalan ng "parental rights" ang isang ina o ama. Ang tinatanggal ay ang "parental authority" -- ito ang karapatan at obligasyong magpasya ukol sa ikabubuti ng bata at kinabukasan nito. Maaari din namang tanggalan ng "custody" ang isang ina o ama.
Ang lahat ng ito ay maaaring gawin ng isang husgado base sa dalawang considerasyon: na ang magulang ay "unfit" at ang pagtanggal ng parental authority o custody sa magulang ay "in the best interest of the child."

Kung malapit ka naman sa isang malaking university na mayroong College of Law, maaari kang pumunta sa kanilang Office of Legal Aid (Ang UP College of Law ay mayroong Office of Legal Aid sa Diliman) at ang mga estudyante doon ay handa na magbigay ng payo sa iyo. Puwede ka din namang sumangguni sa Integrated Bar of the Philippines. May free legal aid clinic din sila.
