Bakit di po ako makatulog kahit antok na antok po ako? Kahit nakapikit po ako

gising po diwa ko. Ano po ba dapat gawin? Nagsimula lang po ito kahapon

Translation: Why can't I sleep even if I'm already feeling very sleepy? Even when I close my eyes, my mind is awake and conscious. What should I do? This started only yesterday.

Hi there and thank you for your question.

Sleep disturbances can occur for many reasons. These can be due to mild issues such as being in a different time zone after travelling to more troublesome ones such as severe emotional stressors.

Other issues can include eating a meal late at night, worrying about tasks and deadlines, using medication which can keep you up (such as cortisone, certain pain medications and alcohol based cough syrups) and even sleeping in another bed. Sudden temperature changes and the presence of insects in the room can also make falling asleep difficult.

The best place to start is to try and isolate the cause of the sleeping disturbance and deal with it appropriately. Issues such as stressors which cause anxiety may be a bit more tricky to deal with but it can be done.

Sleep hygiene techniques usually help with most sleep related issues. You can try the following and see how it goes.
- Set a constant time that you want to go to sleep and when you want to wake up.
- Take a warm bath or shower before heading off to bed.
- Drink a glass of warm milk as this helps and avoid alcohol and caffeine containing drinks.
- When you go to sleep try to make the room as dark as possible. This helps the brain to stimulate melatonin production which is a hormone that helps with sleep.
- When you get into bed then you shouldn't be watching TV or reading a book, you should try to sleep.
- Even if you're not falling asleep, don't get up and do other activities but rather lie in bed.

If these techniques haven't helped after a few days, then I suggest seeing your doctor to try and rule out any possible pathology or psychological issues.

I hope this helps and good luck.
