Translation: Is Scoliosis inherited? Is it also possible that the reason for the uneven curvature of the body of the person is caused by falling off a tree?

What should be done? Because when I was a kid, I fell from a tree. When I was growing up, my mother noticed that my back is uneven. What should I do? I haven't gone to see a doctor yet, because I am scared to take medical tests.

Hi there and thank you for your question.

Scoliosis is a mainly hereditary condition. It's characterized by 3-dimensional deviation of the spinal column but when looking at an X-ray from the back, it can resemble an 'S' or 'C' shape instead of a straight line.

The most common cause of it is when the spine doesn't develop properly in the mother's uterus and is therefore a congenital condition. Other cause of scoliosis can include neurodevelopment issues such as spina bifida and cerebral palsy.

Spinal trauma can also be a cause since fractures of growth plates in a young person can lead to abnormal growth of the bone. In the case of the spine, a growth plate fracture of the vertebrae may lead to an abnormal curvature.

My suggestion to you would be to be examined by a doctor to see if you do actually have an abnormal curvature of the spine. Only if you are diagnosed will you be subjected to further tests, which in this case is X-rays and CT scans which are safe and not invasive procedures.

At least this way you'll know exactly what you're dealing with. Management of scoliosis can be as conservative as physical therapy up to wearing a brace. Surgical intervention is reserved for patients with severe deviations which affect their quality of life.

I hope this helps and good luck.
