I am 29 years old and single. I have irregular menstruation or have to take pills daily to have my period. They said that its hormonal imbalance. I'm worried what will happen to me because its been 5 years taking of pills?
Hi Francis,
Thank you for your question, I'm glad to help.
Although hormonal imbalance is the commonest cause of delayed or irregular periods in women who have previously had regular periods, hormonal imbalance always has an underlying cause.
So for as long as the underlying cause of the hormonal imbalance is not checked or treated, the hormonal imbalance and, in turn, irregular periods would persist even if the hormonal imbalance is transiently controlled with pills.
Underlying causes of hormonal imbalance include ovarian diseases such as polycystic ovary disease, diseases of the thyroid gland, and pituitary gland tumors. These glands play roles in coordinating hormonal balance, so diseases affecting them alter hormonal balance.
Therefore,I suggest that you visit your GP for a referral to your gynecologist for further evaluation and definite treatment.
I hope i have answered your question and provided more clarity on the issue. I'd be glad to answer more of your queries.
Best wishes.

Hi,
Hormonal imbalances can affect menstruation. So your doctor is prescribing you hormones as pills. Don't worry that you are taking hormone supplements for 5 yrs, there are no side effects of hormone supplement pills but it is important to have regular periods.
Also get your other investigations after asking your gynae so that other caused of irregular periods can b ruled out.other causes of irregular periods can be thyroid problems, pcod ,stress etc.
