Si Padre Juan J. Delgado ang unang gumamit ng parirala, na dating kilala bilang Perla de Oriente (Perlas ng Silangan) o Perla del Mar de Oriente (Perlas ng Orient Seas). Nagmula ito sa aklat ni paring Espanyol na si Juan Delgado ang "Perla de Oriente" na ipinakilala ni Jose Rizal sa kanyang nobelang Mi ultimo adios.
Natuklasan ng isang mangingisdang Pilipino ang pinaniniwalaang pinakamalaking perlas sa mundo sa Philippine Sea at ito ngayon ay kilala bilang Perlas ng Puerto.
