Nbsp; Ang Suez Canal ay nagbukas sa pandaigdigang kalakalan noong Nobyembre 17, 1869. Ang paglalakbay sa pagitan ng Europa at Asya ay naging mas madali at mas maikli dahil sa gawang-taong daanan ng tubig na ito sa Egypt. Ang oras ng paglalakbay sa pagitan ng Espanya at Pilipinas ay naputol sa kalahati.
Kasunod ng pagbubukas ng Suez Canal, nakita ng Pilipinas ang mga sumusunod na pagbabago:
- napabuti ang komunikasyon at transportasyon sa pagitan ng Pilipinas at Espanya
- ang paglago ng mga pang-agrikulturang eksport mula sa Pilipinas, tulad ng tabako, abaka, at asukal
- isang pag-akyat sa bilang ng mga dayuhan na pumapasok sa bansa, pangunahin ang mga mangangalakal, na nagdadala ng iba't ibang mga ideolohiyang Europeo tulad ng demokrasya at liberalismo
- pagbibigay sa mga kumportableng Pilipino ng opsyon na mag-aral sa Europa, lalo na sa Spain.
